Notes:
Summary The adsorption of a high-molecular weight polyacrylamide-type flocculant on hydroxy-apatite and fluorapatite surfaces has been investigated, using a nephelometric technique for the direct determination of polyacrylamide in dilute solutions. The effect of such variables as pH, equilibration time and solids concentration on adsorption and flocculation behavior has been studied. Both polymer adsorption and the flocculation of apatite are enhanced as the pH becomes acidic. Adsorption, which is very pH dependent, appears to occur mainly through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic forces. Analysis of the results in terms of a Langmuir adsorption model indicates the specific free energy of adsorption of polyacrylamide on apatites to be of −24.1 kJ/mole of monomer.
