Notes: The mechanical properties of as-cast and hot-forging duplex stainless steel samples withthe same compositions were characterized by nanoindentation. The effect of surface treating methodand working state of the sample on the nanoindentation results of ferrite and austenite were discussed. The results show that the Young’s modulus and hardness of ferrite and austenite may be affected bythe treating method of sample surface. The difference of Young’s modulus average of ferrite oraustenite between as-cast and hot-forging duplex stainless steel samples is not great, but the hardnessaverage of ferrite or austenite in hot-forging sample is obviously higher than those of as-cast sample. The difference of hardness between ferrite and austenite in the same sample is not great, but theyoung’s modulus of ferrite is higher than that of austenite

Notes: Partially aligned and oriented polyacrylonitrile(PAN)-based nanofibers were electrospunfrom PAN and CNTs/PAN in the solution of dimethylformamide(DMF) to manufacture the carbonnanofibers. The as-spun nanofibers were hot-stretched in a temperature controlled oven to enhanceits crystallinity and molecular orientation. Therefore it were stabilized at 250 ( under a stress, andcarbonized at 1000 ( in N2 atmosphere by fixing the length of the stabilized nanofiber to convertthem into carbon nanofibers. With the hot-stretched process and with the content of CNTs, themechanical properties will be enhanced correspondingly. The crystallinity of the stretched fibersconfirmed by X-ray diffraction has also increased. For PAN nanofibers, the improved fiberalignment and crystallinity resulted in the increased mechanical properties, such as the modulus andtensile strength of the nanofibers. It was concluded that the hot-stretched nanofiber and theCNTs/PAN nanofibers can be used as a potential precursor to produce high-performance carboncomposites

Notes: Abstract That mammalian DNA polymerase-β (β-pol) gene transcription is upregulated by activatedras and also by phorbol ester (TPA) treatment suggests the involvement of protein kinase C in the gene expression control for this DNA repair enzyme. Yet, the core promoters of the human, bovine and rodent β-pol genes do not have a TPA response element or other binding site for the transcriptional activator AP-1. Instead, these β-pol promoters appear to be regulated mainly by proteins binding to the cAMP response element (CRE) centered within 50 bp 5′ of the transcriptional start site. In this study, the CRE in the human β-pol promoter was found to mediate TPA upregulation of the cloned promoter in HeLa cell transient expression experiments. To further examine the role of this CRE in TPA stimulation, we used several mutated promoters that were either deficient in protein binding to the CRE or contained extra CRE sites arranged as tandem repeats. All constructs with at least one functional CRE were upregulated by TPA, whereas mutants lacking CRE protein-binding function were not TPA upregulated. Analyses of HeLa nuclear extract DNA-binding proteins indicated that the β-pol CRE was bound by CRE-binding protein (CREB) family members CREB-1 and activating transcription factor-1, but not by AP-1 or complexes containg AP-1 subunits. These results suggest that CREB, rather than AP-1 proteins, are required for the CRE-mediated TPA activation of the β-pol promoter.

Notes: Novel Poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA)/ Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs)/hydroxyapatite (HA) nanofibrous scaffolds with high porosity and well-controlled porearchitectures were prepared via electrospinning techniques. The structure, morphology, molecularweight change of the scaffolds were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Theresults noticed that the average diameter of hybrid nanofiber was similar to that of PLLA/HA fiber, but the surface of hybrid fibers was much coarser because of the introduction of MWNTsnano-particles. The biocompatibility of the scaffold has been investigated by human Dental PulpStem Cells (DPSCs) cell culture on the scaffold. The preliminary results showed that cells werewell adhered and proliferated on the hybrid scaffolds as well as PLLA/HA fibers. Based on theexperimental observations, the aligned nanofibrous PLLA/ MWNTs /HA scaffold could be used asa potential candidate scaffold in dental tissue engineering

Notes: The electrochemical corrosion behavior of carbon fiber/vinyl ester resin composite(CF/VE), which has been used for sucker rods in the oil field, was studied under an immersioncondition of 3% NaCl aqueous solution at 65°C. Galvanic corrosion experiment between the CF/VEcomposite and the alloy used as joints linking the composite sucker rods and metal suckers wasperformed. The results show that in a polarization system, there are a cathode reaction of oxygenabsorption on the surface of the composite and an anode reaction, which is mainly depended on theconcentration of the hydroxyl (OH¯). A slight acceleration of the absorption behavior and thedecrease in the mechanical properties of the CF/VE composite are caused by the galvanic corrosion

Notes: Efficacy of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA)/nano-hydroxyapatite(HA) hybrid nanofibrousscaffolds for dental tissue engineering is described and their performance on normal cells with MG-63is compared as well in this study. Perfectly PLLA/HA fibrous scaffolds were fabricated by anelectrospinning process under optimal condition. Cell culcure and adenovirus encoding greenfluorenscent protein technique were used to study the morphology of cells grown on the scaffolds.[removed info]The results show that the growth of DPSCs and PCs is well observed attached to the PLLA/HA fibers,as well as MG-63, which indicate that the nanofibrous PLLA/HA scaffold could be used as a potentialcell carrier in dental tissue engineering

Notes: Electrospinning has recently emerged as a potential technique for fabricating biomimetictissue engineering scaffolds. In this study, Poly (l-lactic acid) (PLLA) /Nano-hydroxyapatite (HA)hybrid nanofibers scaffolds were prepared by electrospinning. The relationship between processparameters and fiber diameter has been investigated. The fiber diameter decreased with decreasingpolymer concentration and with increasing electrospinning voltage; After 6 weeks of in vitrodegradation, the mass, viscosity-average molecular weight of the nanofibers scaffolds and the pHvalue of the degradation solution were changed, the fibers lost their surface smoothness and aregular rough topology was generated after 32d of degradation, the degradation rates of PLLA/HAhybrid nanofibers were slower than those of pure PLLA fibers; The biocompatibility of thenanofibers scaffold has also been investigated by culturing cells on the nanofibers scaffold, elementary results showed that the cells adhered and proliferated well on the PLLA/HA hybridnanofibers scaffolds

Notes: Abstract Vanadium salts exhibit a wide variety of insulinomimetic effects. In the present studies, we have examined the modulation of G-protein levels and adenylyl cyclase activity in the liver of streptozotocin-induced chronic diabetic rats (STZD) by vanadyl sulfate treatment and compared it with that of insulin. The basal enzyme activity, as well as the stimulatory effects of guanine nucleotides, glucagon, N-Ethylcarboxamideadenosine (NECA), isoproterenol, forskolin and sodium fluoride (NaF) on adenylyl cyclase were significantly increased in STZ-D rat liver as compared to control. In addition, the levels of stimulatory (Gsα) as well as inhibitory (Giα-2 and Giα-3) as determined by immunoblotting techniques were also significantly higher in the STZ-D rat liver, however, the inhibitory effects of oxotremorine and low concentration of GTPγS on adenylyl cyclase were not different in the two groups. Vanadyl sulfate and insulin treatments restored the augmented basal enzyme activity, the stimulations exerted by stimulatory inputs on adenylyl cyclase and the G-protein levels to various degrees, however, vanadyl sulfate was more effective than insulin. In addition, unlike vanadyl sulfate, insulin was unable to improve the stimulation exerted by glucagon and isoproterenol on adenylyl cyclase activity in STZD rats. These results suggest that vanadyl sulfate mimics the effects of insulin to restore the defective levels of G-proteins and adenylyl cyclase activity. From these results it may be suggested that one of the mechanisms by which vanadyl sulfate improves the glucose homeostasis in STZ-D rats may be through its ability to modulate the levels of G-proteins and adenylyl cyclase signal transduction system.
