Notes: Measurements of three-halves harmonic radiation (3ω0/2) produced by femtosecond, Ti:sapphire laser pulses (≤2×1017 W/cm2) in long density scale length plasmas generated from solid aluminum targets are presented. The 3ω0/2 emission yield shows excellent agreement with theories of the two-plasmon decay instability in the predominantly linear regime. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The interaction of high-intensity subpicosecond KrF*-laser pulses with aluminum plasmas has been investigated. The laser pulse absorption and the x-ray production have been related at a series of intensities up to 1017 W/cm2 and different angles of incidence. Soft x-ray spectra were measured in the wavelength range from 7 to 150 A(ring) with various spectrographs. The spectra show distinct dependences on the laser intensity, the polarization, and the angle of incidence. The observed dependence of the spectra on the intensity and on the angle of incidence is the result of both the angular dependence of the laser pulse absorption and that of the conversion efficiency of the absorbed energy into soft x-ray emission. The spectra are influenced by the size of the absorption volume, the electron density where the absorption mainly takes place, and other parameters, such as the electron temperature. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A novel spectrograph comprised of a transmission grating, toroidal mirror, and microchannel plate detector is presented here. It is capable of detecting spectra in the wavelength range from 5 to 150 A(ring) with a resolution of about 1.5 A(ring). Owing it to high efficiency, even an x-ray spectrum of a low-energy laser produced plasma, i.e., emission of the order of 10−10 J/sr, can be measured in a single shot.

Notes: The interaction of subpicosecond KrF-laser pulses with polished and colloidal metal surfaces at an intensity of 8×1015 W/cm2 was investigated experimentally. The measurements with spectral and temporal resolution for the colloidal targets showed a higher energy conversion efficiency into soft x rays and an increase in x-ray pulse lengths. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] IN Mr. J. Starkie Gardner's lecture on The Tropical Forests of Hampshire (NATURE, vol. xv. p. 232), the following statement occurs which is open, I think, to considerable question:—“All the shipworms generally known to us live only in saltwater, and are so delicately organised that the ...

Notes: Abstract The interaction of a subpicosecond KrF laser pulse with a preformed carbon plasma of various scale lengths is investigated. Two different interaction geometries are chosen. In the first one the propagation vector of the short pulse has a component along the density gradient of the preformed plasma (angle of incidence is 45°). In the second geometry the propagation direction of the short pulse is perpendicular to the density gradient of the preplasma (angle of incidence is 90°). The emitted soft X-ray spectrum in the wavelength interval from 10 to 700 Å is observed while changing several parameters of the experiment. It is found that the emission in the “short” wavelength part under 200 Å results from the radiation of ions created by collisional heating near the critical density region. The “long” wavelength part above 200 Å, enhanced up to a maximal factor of 20, is mainly produced by radiating particles field—ionized up to the He-like carbon state in the high-intensity laser field. The “short” wavelength part is missing in the case of 90° angle of incidence because there is no interaction with the critical layer that results in an insufficient collisional heating.

Notes: Abstract. We performed calculations for a chirped-pulse-amplification laser system with a sub-100-fs pulse duration including the finite size of gratings in an aberration-free stretcher/compressor design. Both the higher-order phase dispersion and the spectral clipping, which is due to the finite size of the optics in the stretcher and the compressor, are taken into account in the calculation. We discuss the influence of both phase dispersion and spectral clipping on the important parameters of the recompressed pulse, such as pulse duration, pulse contrast, and peak intensity, employing different phase-dispersion compensation methods. The calculations show that the use of a small compressor grating reduces the higher-order phase errors and smoothes the sharp spectral cut-off caused by spectral clipping in the stretcher, which consequently improves the pulse contrast ratio of the main pulse to the pedestal.

Notes: Abstract Hydrogen-like and helium-like X-ray spectra (between 7.1 and 8.2 Å, i.e., 1500 to 17.50 eV, respectively) from solid aluminium targets irradiated with high intensity (up to 1017 W/cm2) subpicosecond (0.7 ps) laser pulses have been measured. The spectra show that the resonance lines are very broad and very asymmetric. Evidence for a Doppler-shifted reabsorption of the resonance line emission has been found. The spectra have been simulated by a computer code for the calculation of spectral-line intensities and linewidths. Electron densities exceeding the critical density have been estimated for different laser intensities by comparing the observed and simulated intensity ratio of different dielectronic satellite lines. From the X-ray spectra generated byp- ands-polarized radiation fat different laser intensities, the thresholds for the formation of hydrogen-like and helium-like ions have been determined.
