Notes: Abstract The effects of artificial and solar UV-B radiation on the gravitactic (formerly called geotactic) orientation of the freshwater dinoflagellate Peridinium gatunense were measured under artificial UV-B radiation and in a temperature-controlled growth chamber under solar radiation in Portugal. Circular histograms of gravitaxis show the impairement of orientation after UV irradiation. The degree of orientation, quantified using the Rayleigh test and top quadrant summation, decreased as the exposure time to the radiation prolonged. The effects of artifical UV-B radiation on orientation are stronger than those of solar radiation, probably because the radiation source emits higher fluence rates below 300 nm than found in solar radiation. After UV radiation, the gravitactic orientation under artificially increased acceleration at 2 g was drastically affected.

Notes: Abstract The photoorientation of Peridinium gatunense, which causes massive algal blooms each year in Lake Kinneret (Israel), is characterized using a microcomputer-controlled video immage system. The cells show positive phototaxis under a wide light irradiance range from 1 lx up to about 18 klx, i.e., to about fifth of the natural solar radiation measured on the water surface. Above 20 klx diaphototactic movement of the cells is observed. The action spectrum of photoorientation based on fluence rate-response curves shows little activity below 520 nm and a peak of 640 nm. No obvious effect of photosynthetic inhibitors (DCMU and DBMIB) was found on phototaxis, although motility of the cells is drastically affected in the presence of high concentrations of these inhibitors. The results suggest that the photsynthetic mechanism is not involved in photoperception of phototactically active radiation. The ecological significance of photoorientation of the cells is discussed in this paper.

Notes: Severe strain has been introduced to commercially purity (CP) titanium samples by meansof friction roll processing (FRP), which represents an alternative severe plastic deformation techniqueby inducing shear strain. FRP has an excellent possibility of controlling surface microstructurecombining with subsequent annealing. The resultant microstructure refinement and texture evolutionhas been investigated. Hardness of sample was measured to compare mechanical properties ofsamples before and after FRPed. Parameters including the different indentations given to the sampleand sample feeding speed were experimentally conducted to find the optimum condition forinvestigating effect on microstructure evolution. After subsequent annealing, the evolutions ofmicrostructure and texture were observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM)and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy/ electron back scatter diffraction pattern (SEM/EBSP)technique. Transverse texture was found to be the preferred orientation existing in the thin top layerof the sample after FRP and annealed at 823K for 1h

Notes: Abstract In this paper the conditions are derived which the three lowest modes satisfy respectively in an inverted strip dielectric guide (ISDG). The method of optimal design is dealt with for five parameters selected by the Orthogonal Array Table (OAT), which affect the propagation properties including the single-mode bandwidth, the external field divergence, the conductor and the dielectric losses. Many sets of parameters are presented, for which the ISDG s have optimal propagation properties.

Notes: Abstract Purpose. A plasmid-based gene expression system was complexed with protective, interactive, and non-condensing (PINC™) polymer system and administered with Medi-Jector™, a needle-free injection device (NFID), to achieve high and sustained levels of antigen-specific antibodies in blood circulation. Methods. Human growth hormone (hGH) or bacterial β-galactosidase gene expression plasmids driven by a cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter were formulated in saline or complexed with a PINC polymer, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and intramuscularly or subcutaneously administered into dogs and pigs using a 22-gauge needle or a NFID. The hGH-specific IgG titers in serum were measured by an ELISA. β-galactosidase expression was measured in injected muscles by an enzymatic assay or immunohistochemistry. The effect of NFID on DNA stability and topology was assessed by gel electrophoresis. Results. Intramuscular (i.m.) or subcutaneous (s.c.) injection of a hGH expression plasmid pCMV-hGH (0.05-0.5 mg/kg) in dogs and pigs elicited antigen-specific IgG antibody titers to expressed hGH. With both routes of injection, pDNA delivery by a NFID was superior to pDNA injection by needle. The magnitude of hGH-specific IgG titers with NFID was 15−20-fold higher than needle injection when pDNA was complexed with PVP, and only 3−4-fold higher with pDNA in saline. The transfection efficiency in the injected muscle, as measured by β-galaclosidase expression, following i.m. injection of pCMV-β-galaclosidase/PVP, was not significantly different between needle and NFID-injected groups. Conclusions. These data demonstrate that the combination of pDNA/ PVP complexes and a NFID act synergistically to achieve high and sustained levels of antigen-specific IgG response to expressed antigen. This gene delivery approach may offer advantage over needle injection of naked DNA for the development of genetic vaccines.

Notes: Abstract The synergistic extractions of uranium(VI) nitrate using HDEHP,* PMBP** and TBP*** have been studied from benzene media. A new method is proposed to calculate the equilibrium constants for such kinds of ternary synergistic extraction systems. The extraction reactions and their equilibrium constants were found. Models for the extraction mechanism are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract The effects of ultraviolet radiation on the gravitactic orientation of the freshwater flagellate,Euglena gracilis, were determined by a real time image analysis system. Both artificial UV radiation and solar radiation in a temperature-controlled growth chamber were employed. Histograms of gravitaxis showed that the degree of orientation decreased with increasing exposure time; this can be quantified using the Rayleigh test and upper quadrant summation. The effects of artificial UV radiation on the orientation are considerably stronger than those of solar radiation, probably because the radiation source emits higher fluence rates below 300 nm than found in solar radiation. The effects of monochromatic ultraviolet radiation on motility have been determined, and an action spectrum has been calculated.
