    Notes: Abstract Induction of rooting in microshoots of Psoraleacorylifolia was achieved within 6–8 days of cultureon half-strength basal Murashige and Skoog's(1962) medium supplemented with 0.005–0.01 mg/lindole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and 2% (w/v) sucrose. Rooting was drastically reduced and friable callusformed at the cut end of the microshoots when themedium was supplemented with a higher concentration ofauxin. Rooting was totally inhibited when themicroshoots were cultured in vitro undercontinuous light. However, the maximum percentage ofmicroshoots rooted when incubated in continuous lightfor 4 weeks before transfer to the rooting media.Peroxidase activity increased considerably duringroot induction indicating a key role of peroxidase inrooting of microshoots of Psoralea corylifolia invitro.

    Notes: Abstract Plant regeneration via somatic embryogenesis was achieved from callus derived from immature cotyledons of Acacia catechu Willd. on Woody Plant Medium (WPM) supplemented with 13.9 μM kinetin and 2.7 μM 1-naphthaleneacetic acid. The addition of 0.9–3.5 mM L-proline to the medium influenced development of somatic embryos and also promoted secondary somatic embryogenesis. The light-green somatic embryos germinated on half-strength MS medium supplemented with 2% (w/v) sucrose. Somatic embryos germinated into plantlets that were acclimatized in the greenhouse and subsequently transferred to the field.

    Notes: Abstract Plant regeneration via somatic embryogenesis was achieved in leafbase and leaf tip explants derived from 10-day-oldin vitro-grown seedlings ofEchinochloa colona. Somatic embryogenesis was induced in the callus on Murashige and Skoog (1962) medium supplemented with 4.44 µM 6-benzyladenine, 4.64 µM kinetin and 8.05 µM 1-naphthaleneacetic acid after 4 weeks of culture incubated for 14 days in continuous dark and subsequently under a 14-h photoperiod. The incidence of somatic embryogenesis was greater in leafbase- than in leaf tip-derived calluses. Histological observations revealed various stages of development of somatic embryogenesis. The embryos matured and germinated on fresh medium lacking growth regulators. The somatic embryo-derived plantlets were established in soil.

    Notes: Abstract Rooting in terminal shoot and lateral shoot cuttings from 10-year-old elite trees of Casuarina equisetifolia L. in different sex groups was achieved after 20 days when the basal ends of the cuttings were dipped for 3 h in 20 ppm indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). Shoots derived from male plants rooted better than their female and monoecious counterparts, and the lateral shoots were more responsive to rooting than the terminal shoots. During rooting, the metabolic activities varied in both lateral shoot and terminal shoot cuttings derived from plants under different sex groups. Peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase activities were high during root initiation and showed a sharp decline thereafter. The polyphenoloxidase activity was higher in the lateral shoot than the terminal shoot cuttings. The rooted plantlets survived and established well in the field.

    Notes: Abstract High frequency shoot regeneration from cotyledons excised from 4-d-old seedlings of Brassica campestris L. cv. M 27 and Brassica juncea (L.) Czern. cv. Pusabold was achieved on Murashige and Skoog's (MS) medium supplemented with 1.0 mg dm-3 N6-benzyladenine (BA) and 3 % (m/v) saccharose. Rooting occurred simultaneously with shoot formation on the medium containing 1.0 mg dm-3 BA and 0.5 mg dm-3 1-naphthaleneacetic acid. Cultures of cotyledon, cotyledon derived non-differentiating calli and differentiated calli with shoots and/or roots were analysed at different intervals for isozyme patterns of esterase and peroxidase. With the BA-induced development of shoot and/or root from non-differentiating callus, some conspicuous isozymes appeared which indicates the involvement of these isozymes in root and shoot development rather than in induction of morphogenesis in callus.

    Notes: Abstract An efficient protocol was developed for in vitro plant regeneration via somatic embryogenesis from cell suspension cultures of metal tolerant grass Echinochloa colona (L.) Link. Callus was obtained by culturing leaf base on MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg dm-3 of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 2.0 mg dm-3 of 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). Cell suspensions were initiated and established in MS liquid medium containing 0.5 mg dm-3 BAP, 1.0 mg dm-3 NAA and 2.0 mg dm-3 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). A reduction in the concentration of 2,4-D to 0.5 mg dm-3 induced formation of somatic embryos. The embryos developed and grew into normal plants in the presence of half strength MS medium without growth regulators. The regenerated plants were hardened in the greenhouse and subsequently grown in the open. This system may be also used for isolation and culture of protoplasts as a first step in somatic hybridization.

    Notes: Abstract For screening tolerance of six cultivars of rice (Oryza sativa) to different concentrations of nickel (0, 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30 μg dm3), growth parameters (root and shoot length, root and shoot dry matter production) and root and shoot tolerance indexes were tested after 7, 10 and 13 d of treatment. In presence of nickel in nutrient solution, root growth of cv. Nilgiri was enhanced, while in cvs. Subhadra, Khandagiri, Rudra, Sankar and Annapurna it decreased. The root tolerance index (RTI) and shoot tolerance index (STI) in cv. Nilgiri were high; cvs. Sankar and Khandagiri, however, showed a low RTI. Based on the standard growth parameters, six cultivars of rice were ranked in respect of their tolerance to nickel: Nilgiri 〉 Annapurna 〉 Subhadra 〉 Khandagiri 〉 Rudra 〉 Sankar.
