Description: The monitoring of ELF and VLF radio spectrums (between 0.8 and 12 kHz) during the process of the breaking of rock for uniaxial compression has drawn attention to the presence of electromagnetic impulses with two characteristic modalities in a dynamic, which develops before, during and immediately after the breaking, culminating in a paroxysmal, concomitant episode at the point of breaking. The occurrence of this phenomenon appears to be independent from the lithology, which nevertheless conditions it, the evidence in function of the mechanical and structural characteristics of the material. The presence of saturation liquids has significantly influenced this phenomenon. The emission appears to be directly tied to the process of micro and macro fracturing that precedes and determines the breaking of the sample. An analogue emission process has been verified also in conditions of relaxed stress in the settlement process of the lithoid sides after the knocking down of open pits. Finally, a monitoring system of the natural radiation in the atmosphere, followed by a few sensors over the course of two years, found only three signals compatible with the models observed in the laboratory. However for each of these a quake of greater or equal 4.5 magnitude was identified, manifesting itself on national territory with an average delay of 3.6 days.

Description: We present the data on particular electric signals in the frequency band around 8 kHz emitted by various types of rocks that are subject to pressure and fracture in the laboratory and recorded in the surrounding air. A similar type of electric signal was recorded as an electric precursor of the earthquake with magnitude 5.0 that occurred on September 14, 2003 at 22h 42m 50s in the Tosco-Emiliano Apennines (lat. 44.22 N, long. 11.35 E). The precursor was recorded with an instrument called radio-geophone installed in an experimental station located near Cascia (PG) (lat. 42.8 N; long. 13.1E; 900 m a.s.l.).

Description: The Plio-Quaternary Acque Albule Basin is already known for the occurrence of sinkholes; since the spring 2014, it has been ongoing the study of an active subsidence process, which formed a depressed area near the Guidonia village. During the last year, the phenomenon has become more intense giving rise to two collapses along the eastern rim of the depression. Thus, geophysical and geogeochemical investigation campaigns started in order to understand the genesis and evolution of the phenomenon. Survey results allowed a geological and structural characterization, showing the presence of “travertino” at the depression margins and its absence therein. It has been recognized, by the geophysics, features with NW-SE and NNE-SSW direction ascribable to a possible depression fracturing and consistent with regional structural trends. Thus, it has been possible to plan and perform geognostic investigation consisting in two drillings aimed to define the stratigraphy of the marginal and inner part of the depression.

Description: The employment of different instruments for radon continuous measurements within the Italian Radon mOnitoring Network (IRON), mostly INGV, Algade AER and Airthings Corentium instruments, requires a uniform characterization and calibration protocol for the results to be comparable in a rigorous way. A 56 L stainless steel radon chamber with a sensitivity of 0.95 ± 0.01 Bq m-3 per pulse h-1 has been used and validation of Algade AER, Airthings Corentium and Durridge RAD7 radon monitors equipped with solid-state detectors operated at different absolute humidity values has been performed, extending their operative range. Robustness to atmospheric electromagnetic phenomena of INGV and Algade AER instruments has been investigated and, for the former instrument, improved.

Description: On May 2010, due to heavy rainfall, a sinkhole developed in correspondence of the S.P. Carolano roadway (1+200 km, Montelibretti, Roma), in the southernmost sector of the Sabina area. The collapse is located in correspondence of a “U like” shaped profile of the roadway crossing the central sector of a NNW trending valley. In order to obtain a more complete geological characterization of the sinkhole phenomenon, gravity, seismic and electrical investigations have been carried out on the base of previous detailed studies, historical sources and maps. Due to recent propagation of the sinkhole, probably related to the anthropogenic alteration of the superficial drainage network in previous times and recently triggered by heavy rains, local authorities decided to promptly fill the sinkhole with arid material, in order to preserve public safety. In this study is suggested the restoration of the natural runoff of the water flow in the area.

Description: In Rome urban area, within the garden dedicated to Ytzhak Rabin (a portion of the Villa Ada park), occurrence of a few collapses has been observed for the first time in September 2012. In the surroundings, presence of underground cavities- mainly catacombs- is conversely well documented by previous studies. Local authorities were immediately informed of sinkholes formation, because collapses occurred very close to a playground located in a highly frequented sector of the garden. Propagation processes of the phenomena, periodically monitored since their first observation, significantly fastened after a period of heavy rainfalls on Rome area in January- February 2014. Thus, multidisciplinary geophysical investigations have been started in agreement with Civil Protection of Rome Municipality, who has taken preliminary safety measures (installation of fences and danger signals). Hitherto, 28 sinkholes have been identified, aligned along a WNW-ESE trending zone, testifying localized collapses of the roof of underground cavities, probably belonging to the palaeocristian catacomb systems dug nearby Via Salaria. Preliminary geophysical prospections have been performed in a small test area, in order to verify methods applicability and thus program a systematic survey of the whole garden. Drillings, and direct exploration of the accessible galleries, will complete the reconstruction of underground geometry and conservation state of vaults and pillars. Once completed the hazard assessment, the planning of urgent works is expected in order to restore the complete use of the garden.

Description: We present a 1:350,000 high-resolution magnetic anomaly map of Calabria (Southern Italy), obtained by merging the results from two low-altitude aeromagnetic surveys performed in southern and northern Calabria. Magnetic anomalies of Calabria are of low intensity, and mostly range from 11 to –9 nT. Northern Calabria is characterized by positive anomalies in the Tyrrhenian margin (Coastal Chain) that turn into negative values moving eastward in the Sila Massif. Southern Calabria is characterized by slightly positive anomaly values, interrupted by a null magnetic anomaly corridor roughly corresponding to the eastern margin of the Gioia Tauro basin. Finally, anomaly values turn systematically negative in the Messina Straits. Due to the unprecedented resolution (low flying height, spatial sampling along the flight line of ∼5 m and 1–2 km flight line spacing), the new map highlights, in detail, the geometry and setting of the upper crustal features. As Calabria is one of the most seismically active regions in Italy, hit by several high-magnitude earthquakes in recent centuries, the interpretation of this new map will hopefully contribute to new insights into the crustal geological setting, location and dimension of the main seismogenic sources.

Description: The availability of multidisciplinary and high-resolution data is a fundamental requirement to understand the physics of earthquakes and faulting. We present the Alto Tiberina Near Fault Observatory (TABOO), a research infrastructure devoted to studying preparatory processes, slow and fast deformation along a fault system located in the upper Tiber Valley (northern Apennines), dominated by a 60 km long low-angle normal fault (Alto Tiberina, ATF) active since the Quaternary. TABOO consists of 50 permanent seismic stations covering an area of 120 × 120 km2. The surface seismic stations are equipped with 3-components seismometers, one third of them hosting accelerometers. We instrumented three shallow (250 m) boreholes with seismometers, creating a 3-dimensional antenna for studying micro-earthquakes sources (detection threshold is ML 0.5) and detecting transient signals. 24 of these sites are equipped with continuous geodetic GPS, forming two transects across the fault system. Geochemical and electromagnetic stations have been also deployed in the study area. In 36 months TABOO recorded 19,422 events with ML ≤ 3.8 corresponding to 23.36e-04 events per day per squared kilometres; one of the highest seismicity rate value observed in Italy. Seismicity distribution images the geometry of the ATF and its antithetic/synthetic structures located in the hanging-wall. TABOO can allow us to understand the seismogenic potential of the ATF and therefore contribute to the seismic hazard assessment of the area. The collected information on the geometry and deformation style of the fault will be used to elaborate ground shaking scenarios adopting diverse slip distributions and rupture directivity models.
