Notes: [Auszug] Over the past decade, the biotechnology sector in Germany has moved from sideshow to center stage. In 1990, there were just a handful of biotechnology companies in Germany, but by the year 2000 there were over 300, placing Germany at the top of the European league tables (see Fig. 1). ...

Notes: A new insertion sequence (IS1383) was identified on plasmids from Pseudomonas putida strain H and its nucleotide sequence was determined. IS1383 contains perfect terminal inverted repeats of 13-bp flanking a 1.4-kb internal sequence. A single significant open reading frame was identified that can encode a 342-amino acid polypeptide which was predicted to be highly basic and to have homology to polypeptides known from several other bacterial insertion sequences. At least six copies of IS1383 are present on the plasmids pPGH1 and pPGH2, whereas no copy could be detected on the chromosome of P. putida strain H. Target duplications did not flank the inverted repeats of any of the six IS1383 copies examined. Analysis of the integration sites of IS1383 revealed hints for a target specificity. Multiple sequence alignments of the transposases, the inverted repeats and the integration sites pointed to the assignment of IS1383 into a putative new family of insertion sequences defined as the IS1111 family.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Summary.  The phase behaviour of poly(di-n-decylsilane) (PD10S) was investigated by DSC and 29Si as well as 2H solid state NMR spectroscopy. For 2H NMR experiments, the polymer was deuterated in the α-position of the side chains. Depending on the thermal history of the sample, DSC shows two transitions at 303 and 320 K with varying intensity ratio. Above 320 K, only the conformationally disordered mesophase exists. NMR spectra prove the existence of two crystalline states I and II. State I is either a pure phase with a complex backbone structure or a superposition of several crystalline modifications, whereas state II probably corresponds to a single phase with transoid backbone conformation. Either state can be obtained separately.

Notes: [Auszug] The study described here was designed to test the hypothesis that the presence of immature astrocytes is a prerequisite for ocular dominance (OD) plasticity by transplanting astrocytes cultured from newborn kittens into the visual cortices of five adult cats (Fig. 1). These animals were at least ...

Notes: Summary 1. The effect of acetylcholine (ACh) on the response properties of single units in the caudal auditory telencephalon was studied both in awake chickens and in an in vitro slice preparation. 2. Two types of electrophysiological behavior in response to ACh were observed: an inhibition of cell firing typical for the majority of neurons in the auditory hyperstriatum ventrale and a facilitation of neuronal responses seen predominantly in neostriatal auditory units. 3. The facilitatory effect of ACh is also present in hyperstriatal cells, but is usually dominated by an indirect inhibition. 4. ACh-induced facilitation on single unit responses could be mimicked in awake birds by applying potentially arousing sensory stimuli. 5. The effects of ACh are antagonized by the muscarinic receptor blocker scopolamine. 6. Inhibitory responses can also be antagonized by the GABA-antagonist bicuculline and thus can be attributed to an ACh-induced activation of GABAergic inhibitory interneurons. Evidence is given that the facilitatory responses result from a closure of voltage-dependent potassium channels. 7. The results are discussed with respect to a possible role of cholinergic afferents in telencephalic processing of auditory information and in comparison with the cholinergic influences in the mammalian neocortex.

Notes: Summary The distribution of presumed GABAergic neurons and axon terminals in nuclei of the higher auditory pathway of the chicken was investigated by immunocytochemical methods employing antisera to the rate-limiting enzyme of GABA synthesis, glutamic acid decarboxylase, and to GABA. In the mesencephalic auditory center (MLD) about 20% of the cells reveal immunoreactivity. In contrast, the thalamic relay station nucleus ovoidalis is devoid of immunostained somata. This nucleus contains a high density of punctate immunoreactive structures presumed to be GABAergic axon terminals. In the auditory forebrain center field L and the auditory portions of the hyperstriatum ventrale, up to 8% of the cells were immunopositive. These neurons were significantly smaller than estimated from measurements of the overall cell population in these nuclei. From the two-dimensional arrangement of immunopositive neurons it is suggested that the GABAergic system in the avian auditory telencephalon consists of two separate groups of neurons: one subgroup mediating local inhibitory interactions, the other responsible for lateral inhibition between different frequency representations.
