Notes: Using pSXIVVI+X3 as an expressing vector, an occluded recombinant Trichoplusia ni nuclear polyhedrosis virus carrying the cDNA encoding plasminogen activators inhibitor-2 (PAI-2) under the control of the Syn and XIV promoters, has been constructed. SDS-PAGE and immunoblot analysis revealed that the virus-mediated PAI-2, with a molecular weight of ∼45 kDa, was synthesized in the Sf cells at a level of ∼16% of total intracellular protein and in the supernatant phase at a level of ∼64% of total extracellular protein secreted into the hemolymph of infected larvae. The expressed protein was similar to its authentic counterpart in terms of immunoreactivity and bioactivity.

Notes: Human nerve growth factor (hNGF) gene was proliferated with human leucocyte DNA as template by PCR. Then a fusion gene coding hNGF and luciferase (Luc) cDNAs was inserted into transfer vector pSXIVVI+X3/3 with the control of Syn XIV promoter. Luc and hNGF were simultaneously synthesized in Spodoptera larvae upon infection with a recombinant baculovirus, TnNPV-Luc-NGF-OCC+. Densitometric scanning of SDS-PAGE revealed that ∼18% of the total Coomassie blue-stainable protein of the infected larvae was represented by Luc protein, while the hNGF level was ∼8%. Both proteins were similar to their authentic counterparts in terms of immunoreactivity.

Notes: A fusion gene coding human granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) cDNAs was inserted into the transfer vector pSXIVVI+ X3 with the control of Syn and XIV promoters. The Sf9 cells (Spodoptera frugiperda) were co-transfected with the recombinant plasmid and TnNPV DNA (Trichoplusia ni nuclear polyhedrosis virus DNA). The fusion protein recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) could be synthesized in cells infected with recombinant virus at a level of about 23% of their total cellular protein. Activity analysis of the fusion protein in infected cells revealed that it exhibited the dual activities of GM-CSF and LIF. Western blot analysis of the expressed fusion protein in infected larvae showed that the virus-mediated fusion protein, with a molecular weight of ∼35 kDa, is confirmed with immunoreactivity.

Notes: Abstract A potential boronate affinity chromatography ligando-boronobenzalmethoxyamine (IV) and its precursor [o-formylbenzeneboronic acid (III)] were synthesized and characterized by three-dimensional single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. Both compounds contained no bonding between the boron atoms and the oxygen atoms [O(3)] of the distinguishing functional group. In addition,11B NMR data confirmed the lack of any coordination between the boron and oxygen atoms in the boronic acid compoundsIII andIV and the catachol ester derivative (V) ofIV.o-Formylbenzeneboronic acid (III) crystallizes in space groupP21/n witha=3.883(1),b= 13.225(1),c=14.029(2) Å, β=92.16(1)o, and four molecules per unit cell.o-Boronobenzalmethoxyamine (IV) crystallizes in space group Pcen witha=14.158(2),b=17.156(1),c=7.734(2)Å, and eight molecules per unit cell. Selected bond distances and angles are tabularized.

Notes: Abstract Conventional electrowinning of metals such as zine and copper from 1–1.5 kmol m−3 H2SO4 electrolytes involves anodic oxygen evolution at Pb alloy/PbO2 anodes operating at 200–800 A m−2. The oxygen overpotential, estimated to be about 0.6 V, constitutes a significant proportion of the cell voltage (typically 2.5 V for Cu and 3.3 V for Zn). The objective of this work was to lower the anode overpotential and so decrease the process specific energy requirements, by devising new anode materials based on: (1) PTFE-bonded PbO2 catalysts, supported on Pb−Ag alloys; (2) modification of the pore structure of porous electrodes to maximize the utilization of the available surface without the use of PTFE bonding. Both methods are shown to produce significant benefits in lowering oxygen overpotentials, though the latter technique has been tested only in alkaline electrolytes, as yet. However, with the former approach, substrate oxidation through the porous catalyst layer has been found to cause catalyst shedding after〉60 h at 1 kA m−2, though careful pre-oxidation of the anode substrate appears to extend the anode life.

Notes: Abstract. We carry out Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) calculations on the interchain coupling model for the quasi-one-dimensional organic ferromagnets under open boundary condition. Considering the topology of the system, the two-step DMRG technique is adopted. It is found that in the high spin ground state of the system the interchain coupling is in favor of the stability of ferromagnetic state, and the on-site electron-electron repulsive interaction has the same effect. However the inter-site electron-electron interaction causes a charge density distribution along the main chain and weakens the stability of the ferromagnetic ground state. The lattice distortion along the main chain is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract. We have studied the effect of the reading beam on the decay process of the photoinduced second-order susceptibility χ(2) in both the guest-host system (disperse red 1-doped polymethyl methactrylate) and the side-chain system (disperse red 19-functionalized polyimide polymer). Both experimentally and theoretically, we have proved that the reading beam has the erasure effect on the decay process, that is, χ(2) decays faster in the high intensity than in the low intensity of the reading beam. Furthermore, the relationship between the time constant τB of the slow component of the decay process and the intensity of the reading beam I1.06 is derived from the theoretical equations, which is fitted well with the experimental results. Based on the fitting parameters, we also compare, quantitatively, the thermal-induced orientational diffusion of trans- and the quantum efficiency of trans-to-cis photoisomerization in the two systems.

Notes: Abstract. Yb:Ca4YO(BO3)3 (Yb:YCOB) crystal with good quality and large size has been grown by the Czochralski method. The polarization absorption and fluorescence spectra have been measured. The laser action of the Yb:YCOB crystal has been demonstrated when it is pumped by a fiber-coupled laser diode (LD) at the wavelength of 976.4 nm. The pumping threshold is 55 mW, the light-light conversion efficiency is 58.7%, and a slope efficiency of up to 73% is thus calculated.

Notes: Abstract.  The collisional effect due to the multi-photon ionization process in dielectric material has been studied. We found that the breakdown threshold of fused silica is the same for both linearly and circularly polarized light at 55 fs and 100 fs, which we believe is an indication of the suppression of multi-photon ionization in solids. By numerically solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation with scattering, for the first time, we have observed substantial reduction of the multi-photon ionization rate in dielectrics due to collisions.
