Notes: The original ignition "point designs" (circa 1992) for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) [J. A. Paisner, E. M. Campbell, and W. J. Hogan, Fusion Technol. 26, 755 (1994)] were made energetically conservative to provide margin for uncertainties in laser absorption, x-ray conversion efficiency and hohlraum-capsule coupling. Since that time, extensive experiments on Nova [J. T. Hunt and D. R. Speck, Opt. Eng. 28, 461 (1989)] and Omega [J. M. Soures et al., Phys. Plasmas 3, 2108 (1996)] and their related analysis indicate that NIF coupling efficiency may be almost "as good as we could hope for." Given close agreement between experiment and theory/modeling, one can credibly explore target enhancements which couple more of NIFs energy to an ignition capsule. These include using optimized mixtures of materials to reduce x-ray wall losses, slightly reduced laser entrance holes, and laser operation strategies which increase the amount of energy one can extract from NIF. It is found that 3–4× increases in absorbed capsule energy appear possible, providing a potentially more robust target and ∼10× increase in capsule yield.

Notes: Solid state density aluminum and carbon plasmas were generated by 350 fs KrF laser pulses at intensities of 1017 W cm−2. Reflectivity, x-ray emission, and spectra of the backscattered radiation were measured as a function of the laser polarization, angle of incidence, and intensity (I). For p-polarized light, the absorption (A) is almost intensity independent for 1015 W cm−2〈I〈2×1017 W cm−2, and can reach values up to A=0.8. For constant laser intensity, p-polarized light is up to a factor of 15 more efficient in generating x rays than s-polarized light. A polarization and angle of incidence-dependent absorption mechanism, such as resonance absorption or vacuum heating, is consequently important. The spectral line shape and positions of the reflected radiation from the carbon plasma showed a substantial intensity dependence. It is demonstrated that the backscattered spectrum is influenced by the plasma expansion (Doppler effect) and the temporal development of the electron density.

Notes: We measured optical phase conjugation via low-power degenerate four-wave mixing at 532 nm as a function of temperature in semiconductor-microcrystallite-doped glasses. We find that the overall efficiency of the phase conjugation process increases with decreasing temperature and is temperature independent between 77 and 100 K. The results are interpreted as the combined effect of the increased transmission due to the increased band gap and an effective χ(3) which increased due to a decrease of the trapped carrier recombination rate.

Notes: The fidelity of phase conjugation by degenerate four-wave mixing in ruby and semiconductor-doped glasses has been measured by means of our own modified Twyman–Green interferometer [Opt. Lett. 14, 183 (1989)] implementing two phase conjugate mirrors. It is shown that the fidelity of phase conjugators with an OG530 color filter as the nonlinear medium reaches a value of 99%. The fidelity of ruby is also reported. Additionally the effect of the recording system on the value of the fidelity is discussed.

Notes: The properties of laser-driven tantalum photocathodes as an electron emitter for the creation of ultrashort electron bunches and x-ray pulses are discussed. Despite the smaller quantum efficiency of metals, their inertness, damage threshold, and lifetime compare favorably with semiconductor photocathodes. Using the fourth harmonic of a Nd:YAG laser, currents of over 3 nC per pulse have been achieved which produced x-ray pulses with a brightness of 6.2×106 Cu Kα x-ray photons cm−2 sr−1 and a duration of 70 ps, as determined by an x-ray streak camera.

Notes: We have performed experimental studies designed to elucidate the parameters which limit the efficiency and fidelity of optical phase conjugate reflection of picosecond laser pulses in transparent Kerr media. The experimental data show that at low pulse energies, the reflectivity follows the expected square dependence on the pulse energies. However, it falls below the square at high energies even though, at these high energies, a phase conjugation efficiency of 300% was observed. We observed a rather strong dependence of the reflectivity on the ratio of pump to probe pulse energy. The quality of phase conjugation decreased at very high pump energies, but could under some conditions be improved by focusing the probe beam into the interaction region. Of the several mechanisms responsible for the decrease in efficiency and fidelity, we find that the predominant ones are pump depletion, small scale self-focusing, and dephasing owing to a difference in energy of the two pump pulses.

Notes: The fading of the phase conjugation efficiency and luminescence quantum yield in CdSxSe1−x-doped glasses was investigated as a function of laser exposure using pulsed and cw mode-locked lasers. An analysis of the kinetics of the photodarkening effect is presented. The rate constant of the fading process depends nonlinearly upon the laser fluence and is sensitive to the origin of the glass.
