    Notes: Summary Using a fluorescence technique numerous developing noradrenergic nerve terminals were observed in the muscle coat of the rat ductus deferens, between 2 and 6 days postpartum. In the electron microscope similar developing nerve terminals possessed an extensive system of tubular endoplasmic reticulum but did not contain the small dense cored vesicles characteristic of mature noradrenergic nerve terminals. Thus the tubular reticulum is proposed as an alternative storage site for noradrenaline in developing adrenergic nerves.

    Notes: Abstract Plagioclase buoyancy experiments have been carried out in a high-temperature centrifuge furnace using seventeen basaltic liquids and plagioclase crystals of three compositions: An89, An76 and An55. The results show that the floating tendency of plagioclase in basaltic liquids is at least 0.03 g/cm3 greater than indicated by the calculations. If this correction factor is applied to calculations of plagioclase buoyancy in the Skaergaard Intrusion, it is found that the plagioclase crystals in the lower and middle zones were less dense than the coexisting liquids. Other phenomena relevant to crystal transport in basaltic liquids were observed in the centrifuge experiments. These included crystal flotation by rising bubbles, plagioclase sinking because of the formation of plagioclase-magnetite composite grains, graded bedding of olivine and magnetite, and more than 60% intercumulus basaltic liquid between settled olivine crystals.

Les déformations dans la région plastique a la pointe de la fissure varient approximativement en raison inverse de la distance de la fissure. On a dérivé des expressions pour l'énergie dissipée en déformation plastique pour les sollicitations tant statiques que cycliques.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung Es werden bei einachsiger Zugbeanspruchung die Spannungs — und Verformungsverteilungen bei Anrissen in Blechen aus Werkstoffen mi.t verschiedenen V erfestigungseigenschaften festgestellt. Die Verformungen im plastischen Gebiet an der Anrisspitze verändern sich etwa umgekehrt mit deco Abstand vom Anriss. Es werden Ausdrücke abgeleitet fur die durch plastische Verformung bei statischer bzw. schwellender Beanspruchung aufgenommene Arbeit.
    Notes: Abstract The stress and strain distributions around cracks in sheet materials having various work-hardening characieristics are obtained for uniaxial loading. The strains in the plastic region at the crack tip tend to vary inversely as the distance from the crack. Expressions are derived for the energy absorbed in plastic deformation during both static and cyclic loadings.

    Notes: Summary Light and electron microscopic techniques have been used to determine the distribution, morphology and innervation of subepithelial striated muscle cells in the wall of the proximal urethra of the male guinea-pig. These cells form a continuous layer, immediately beneath the urethral epithelium extending from the bladder neck to the termination of the ejaculatory ducts into the proximal urethra. They differ from “typical” striated muscle fibres (as seen in the external urethral sphincter) by their small size, rich acetylcholinesterase content and the irregular arrangement of intracellular myofilaments and sarcoplasmic reticulum. In addition, motor end plate regions have not been observed on these striated cells when examined using a light microscopic histochemical technique. The cells are related to acetylcholinesterase positive nerves which run between them in a manner compatible with the occurrence of “en passant” synaptic interactions. Using electron microscopy, axonal varicosities containing small (50 nm diameter) agranular vesicles are encountered 50 nm from the striated cells; membrane specialisations characteristic of motor end plates have not been observed on the cells. The findings are discussed, particularly in relation to the distribution, unusual morphology and innervation of these subepithelial muscle cells.

    Notes: Summary The fine structure of the endothelium lining the femoral and mesenteric veins in the rabbit was examined following the infusion of concentrations of adrenaline varying from 0.5 to 5.0 μg/kg. Control animals were infused with saline. Vesiculation of the endothelial cells was observed following each infusion of adrenaline, the effect being most marked with the highest dose used. It is suggested that this vesiculation may be associated with the release of antihaemophilic globulin and/or plasminogen activator from the endothelial cells.

    Notes: Abstract The optimal trajectories in the neighborhood of an optimal intermediate-thrust arc are investigated for the minimumfuel orbit rendezvous problem with fixed specific impulse. Since such an arc is singular, the thrust acceleration magnitude being the singular control component, a second-variation analysis leads to the identification of a field of neighboring, singular arcs in a state space of dimension four rather than six, provided that a suitable Jacobi condition is met. A given neighboring initial six-dimensional state vector does not generally lie on a neighboring singular arc, and junction onto the appropriate singular arc must be accomplished by a short period of strong variations in the acceleration. This contributes an addition to the fuel expenditure which is of order 5/2 rather than 2 in the initial state displacement. The minimization of this higher-order cost, in the case of bounded acceleration, leads to an unsymmetrical version of Fuller's problem, whose solution requires an infinite number of switches between maximum and zero thrust during the short period. For unbounded thrust, the junction simplifies to either coast-impulse-singular trajectories or impulse-coast-impulse-singular trajectories. The neighboring singular arc meets the final condition in 4 dimensions, rather than 6 dimensions, and rendezvous must be completed by another, terminal short period of strong variations in the acceleration. Implications for midcourse guidance near a singular arc are discussed.

Un schéma de la fissuration progressive sous chargement cyclique est propesé, qui se base sur les differéntes formes adoptées par l'extrémité d'une fissure selon que celle-ci est sollicitée ou non; ce schéma permet une prédiction des vitesses de fissuration progressive sous chargement cyclique qui se rapproche de celles établies par détermination expérimentale.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung Bestehende, experimentelle Angaben über die Ermüdungsrissvergrösserung werden zusammengefasst. Ein auf die verscheidenen mit dem beanspruchten und nicht beanspruchten Riss verbundenen Rissspitzformen gegründetes Modell der Ermüdungsrissvergrösserung wird vorgeschlagen; es ermöglicht Vorhersagen von Ermüdungsrissvergrösserungsgeschwindigkéiten, die sich den aus gewisse Werkstoffe experimentell festgestellten gut zuordnen.
    Notes: Abstract Existing experimental data on fatigue crack growth are summarized. A fatigue crack growth model is proposed, based on the different crack tip geometries of a loaded and unloaded crack; the model leads to predictions of the rates of growth of fatigue cracks, in certain materials, comparable to those determined experimentally.
