Notes: Iron oxide films have been deposited on alumina substrates by pulsed ruby laser evaporation from a bulk α-Fe2O3 pellet. The films have been characterized by using the techniques of conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy, Rutherford backscattering, and scanning electron microscopy. It is demonstrated that the stoichiometry of the deposited film can be varied between FeO and Fe3O4 by controlling the oxygen partial pressure during deposition over a range from 5×10−7 to 10−4 Torr. It is further shown that the Fe3O4 film can be converted into γ-Fe2O3 by suitable thermal annealing treatment.

Notes: The nature of pulsed ruby laser-induced vaporization from the surface of a binary oxide represented by ZnxFe3−xO4 (x∼1) is studied via morphological (scanning electron microscopy), compositional (energy-dispersive analysis of x ray), structural (small-angle x-ray diffraction), and microstructural (conversion electron Mössbauer) examination of the laser-processed surface and correlation of the related surface modification to the properties of thin films deposited therefrom, and subjected to similar examination. Zinc ferrite (ZnxFe3−xO4) films have been deposited on single-crystal Al2O3 substrates and the dependence of the film properties on the oxygen partial pressure and substrate temperature during deposition is studied to explore optimized conditions for deposition of near single-phase stoichiometric films.

Notes: Abstract A Lorentz-invariant formulation of the 3-dimensional harmonic oscillator is proposed for serving as the confining part of the kernel of a Bethe-Salpeter equation for aqq system, and likewise for aqqq system. Such a kernel is amenable to an effective 3-dimensional reduction in the null-plane approximation (NPA), so as to maintain explicit NPA-covariance for the (reduced) BS equations as well as the corresponding wave functions. This rectifies the mathematical limitation of an earlier BS formulation (by Mitra and coworkers) forqq andqqq systems with non-covariant h. o. kernels which was restricted to the instantaneous approximation and was therefore valid only for slowly moving hadrons. The present (covariant) formulation agrees exactly with the earlier (non-covariant) treatment for hadrons at rest, thus preserving all the physical results on mass spectra, etc., obtained with the latter, but is now formally applicable to processes involving hadrons in motion.

Notes: Abstract A theoretical analysis is made of the heat, mass and momentum transfer from an evaporative liquid sphere which is suddenly introduced into a parallel stream of fluid at a higher temperature. The velocity field around the liquid sphere is assumed to be steady and of the Hadamard-Rybczynski type. Numerical solutions of energy and the vapour mass continuity equations have been carried out using the alternate direction implicit scheme of finite difference method. Temporal histories of the average Nusselt and Sherwood numbers (Nu, Sh) alongwith the drag coefficient (C D ) during the life time of an evaporating drop have been predicted in terms of the pertinent input parameters, namely, initial and instantaneous Peclet number (Pe i ,Pe), Lewis number (Le), and the ratio of free stream to initial droplet temperature (T a ′ /T i ). Variations of local Nusselt and Sherwood numbers withPe, in the region of steady state evaporation, have also been presented. Values ofNu for steady state droplet evaporation are found to be in fair agreement with the corresponding values evaluated from the empirical equation of Eisenklam [5].

Notes: Summary The frequency of sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) was studied in leucocytes from 46 patients with cervical carcinoma, 89 precancerous lesions, and 43 age-matched control women. The frequency of SCEs was found to be 10.15 ±2.49 in cancer, 8.83±2.15 in precancerous lesions, and 7.55±2.24 in controls. The analyses of SCE data revealed a highly significant (P〈0.001) increase in precancerous and cancerous lesions compared to controls. The intra-chromosomal distribution of SCEs revealed a random increase in various chromosomal groups in patients with cancer and dysplasia compared to controls. The mean SCE level among various groups of precancerous lesions according to severity of pathological condition did not show significant differences. However, 70.8% of dysplasia cases revealed SCE levels higher than the average in controls. The increased frequencies of SCEs in the majority of cancer patients and a few, precancerous lesions indicate that individuals with high SCE levels may be at a high risk of developing cancer. Thus the usefulness of SCE levels as a preclinical marker to identify the high risk group of dysplasias needs to be ascertained by follow-up studies; these are in progress.

Notes: Abstract Ground-state masses ofq 2 $$\bar q$$ −2 states (“true” and “mock” baryonium) are investigated in the framework of a Bethe-Salpeter formalism motivated from QCD. The four-particle system is described by pairwise interactions betweenqq orq $$\bar q$$ pairs with a spectator approximation for the non-interacting pair. The quark-quark interactions are Coulomb plus harmonic interactions; the harmonic terms have been modified to produce linear confinement for heavier quarks, in agreement with experimental spectra. The confining interaction is proportional to the strong coupling constantα s. Apart from the quark masses, the confining interaction is characterized by three basic parameters: (i) a universal spring constantω 0; (ii) a constantC 0/ω 0 2 , which defines the vacuum structure; (iii) a constantA 0, which provides a smooth transition from quadratic to linear confinement as one goes from light to heavy quark systems. These three constants [ω 0 = 0.158 GeV;C 0=0.296;A 0=0.0283] have been shown to produce excellent fits to all quarkonia states [q $$\bar q$$ ,q $$\bar Q$$ ,Q $$\bar Q$$ ] as well as baryon spectra (qqq); thus our predictions forq 2 $$\bar q$$ 2 states contain no free parameters. In this model, theL=0 ground states occur in the range 1.8–2 GeV, 2.15–2.3 GeV and 6.72–6.75 GeV foru 2 ū 2,s 2 $$\bar s$$ 2 andc 2 $$\bar c$$ 2 states, respectively. We discuss the prospects for these states to be seen experimentally. In the case of thes 2 $$\bar s$$ 2 state, this is likely to have a rather narrow width, and may correspond to theX(2.22 GeV) meson observed in radiative decays of theJ/ψ meson. Thec 2 $$\bar c$$ 2 state might also be visible as a ψψ resonance with an appreciable width.
