    Notes: The introduction of cells has in general been beneficial to organizations by improving productivity and quality, reducing lead times and providing non-routine jobs for personnel within the cell. However, there is no doubt that such changes create conflict due to the transition from a functional structure to a more flexible cellular environment. Charts the development of the cell structure within an aerospace company in order to identify the potential problems which can arise between the various participants both inside and outside the cells. Uses Maister's Professional Service Firm model to identify the roles and responsibilities of the support functions and management which service the cells. Proposes that this framework not only illustrates how planning and organizing issues can be addressed using the concepts developed by Maister, but also provides an illustration of how one model propounded by management educators can provide a foundation for enhancing organizational performance.

    Notes: Attempts to show that environmental issues are becoming increasingly important as an attribute of the quality of goods and services. However, although firms appreciate the importance of good environmental practices there is a lack of awareness of how this can best be achieved, particularly in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Suggests that one way to enhance understanding among SMEs is to consider environmental responsibility as part of the quality attributes which customers may expect from suppliers. Presents a quality profiling approach which is based on customers' perceptions, which should assist an SME to: establish the importance of environmental factors with respect to other attributes in the purchasing decision; and evaluate the organization's performance on key product/service attributes relative to its main rivals. Discusses the role of governments and other bodies in relation to encouraging a proactive environmental approach among SMEs.

    Notes: Several formal methodologies are proposed for evaluating prospective suppliers. Three popular methods for supplier performance evaluation appear in the literature: categorical, weighted point and cost ratio. However, these techniques have a number of disadvantages associated with them and an alternative approach is suggested which applies dimensional analysis to selecting prospective suppliers. An international purchasing office (IPO), located in Hong Kong, has been applying the dimensional analysis approach to evaluating suppliers based in Hong Kong and China. Using the IPO as a case study, the article discusses the benefits of this approach over the traditional assessment methods and how it can be used to measure not only supplier performance, but also the contribution to the purchasing relationship from the buyer organisation.

    Notes: Many manufacturers are considering the just-in-time (JIT) philosophy in order to become more competitive in global markets. An important element of the JIT strategy is the purchasing function. The procurement of parts and materials plays a key role in the successful implementation of a JIT strategy because it has a direct impact on increased productivity, reduced costs and improved quality. Experts agree that supplier selection is one of the most important activities of purchasing.     Notes: Student assessment and the development of transferable personal skills are receiving increasing attention in higher education establishments. Examines the potential for enhancing student learning through the development of groupwork, presentation and self- and peer-assessment skills. Describes a methodology which indicates the approach adopted and a questionnaire evaluates students' impressions of the process. Concludes that skill development does take place and that students find groupwork an enjoyable learning experience. With regard to self and peer-assessment, students were not as enthusiastic. Ultimately, there is a need to continue to involve students so that they can see evaluation in a positive, developmental light and to encourage students to take a more proactive role in assessing their performance.

    Notes: Many industrial companies have expressed a growing concern over thequality of managers in manufacturing industry and their ability to adaptto rapid environmental and technological changes. In addition, it hasbeen felt that in the UK, the traditional postgraduate managementteaching mechanism tended to be out of date and excessively academic. Toaddress these shortcomings, what seems to be needed is the developmentof postgraduate courses which place more weight on the industrialexperience of the participants. At the same time, it is necessary togive postgraduate teaching a stronger orientation towards the actualneeds of industry rather than the perceived needs as seen by thecontemporary academic. As a result, companies are now beginning toinvestigate alternative approaches to developing the business andtechnical skills of their managers. One such approach has been adoptedby a Northern Ireland subsidiary of a multinational corporation in theaerospace industry. As part of this process, the firm asked theUniversity of Ulster, in conjunction with the Irish ManagementInstitute, to provide a programme of developmental support in acomprehensive range of general management concepts, skills andtechniques.

The skills and competencies required by professionals in the past are not the same as those required today. This article charts the development of the purchasing function within a multinational aerospace company as a result of introducing major structural changes. Maister's Professional Service Firm model is then applied in an operational manner to outline the changing roles and responsibilities of the procurement function and to identify potential areas for training and development.     Notes: Interactions between element chemistry and the ambient geochemistry play a significant role in the control of radionuclide migration in the geosphere. These same interactions influence radionuclide release from near surface, low level radioactive waste, disposal sites once physical containment has degraded. In situations where LLW contains significant amounts of metal and organic materials such as cellulose, microbial degradation in conjunction with corrosion can significantly perturb the ambient geochemistry. These processes typically produce a transition from oxidising to reducing conditions and can influence radionuclide migration through changes in both the dominant radionuclide species and mineral phases. The DRINK (DRIgg Near field Kinetic) code is a biogeochemical transport code designed to simulate the long term evolution of the UK low level radioactive waste disposal site at Drigg. Drigg is the UK's principal solid low level radioactive waste disposal site and has been receiving waste since 1959. The interaction between microbial activity, the ambient geochemistry and radionuclide chemistry is central to the DRINK approach with the development of the ambient pH, redox potential and bulk geochemistry being directly influenced by microbial activity. This paper describes the microbial aspects of the code, site data underpinning the microbial model, the microbiology/chemistry interface and provides an example of the code in action.

    Notes: Abstract I argue here for a number of ways that modern computational science requires a change in the way we represent the relationship between theory and applications. It requires a switch away from logical reconstruction of theories in order to take surface mathematical syntax seriously. In addition, syntactically different versions of the “same” theory have important differences for applications, and this shows that the semantic account of theories is inappropriate for some purposes. I also argue against formalist approaches in the philosophy of science and for a greater role for perceptual knowledge rather than propositional knowledge in scientific empiricism.
