    Notes: Summary Using a fluorescence technique numerous developing noradrenergic nerve terminals were observed in the muscle coat of the rat ductus deferens, between 2 and 6 days postpartum. In the electron microscope similar developing nerve terminals possessed an extensive system of tubular endoplasmic reticulum but did not contain the small dense cored vesicles characteristic of mature noradrenergic nerve terminals. Thus the tubular reticulum is proposed as an alternative storage site for noradrenaline in developing adrenergic nerves.

    Notes: Abstract We examine the BRS cohomology of chiral matter inN=1,D=4 supersymmetry to determine a general form of composite superfield operators which can suffer from supersymmetry anomalies. Composite superfield operators Ψ(a, b) are products of the elementary chiral superfieldsS and $$\bar S$$ and the derivative operatorsD α, $$D_\alpha ,\bar D_{\dot \beta } $$ and $$\partial _{x\dot \beta } $$ . Such superfields Ψ(a, b) can be chosen to have “a” symmetrized undotted indices α i and “b” symmetrized dotted indices $$\dot \beta _j $$ . The result derived here is that each composite superfield Ψ(a,b) is subject to potential supersymmetry anomalies ifa−b is an odd number, which means that Ψ(a,b) is a fermionic superfield.

    Notes: Abstract Supersymmetry transformations are a kind of square root of spacetime translations. The corresponding Lie superalgebra always contains the supertranslation operator $$\delta = c^\alpha \sigma _{\alpha \dot \beta }^\mu \bar c^{\dot \beta } (\varepsilon ^\mu )^\dag $$ . We find that the cohomology of this operator depends on a spin-orbit coupling in anSU(2) group and has a quite complicated structure. This spin-orbit type coupling will turn out to be basic in the cohomology of supersymmetric field theories in general.

    Notes: Abstract Plagioclase buoyancy experiments have been carried out in a high-temperature centrifuge furnace using seventeen basaltic liquids and plagioclase crystals of three compositions: An89, An76 and An55. The results show that the floating tendency of plagioclase in basaltic liquids is at least 0.03 g/cm3 greater than indicated by the calculations. If this correction factor is applied to calculations of plagioclase buoyancy in the Skaergaard Intrusion, it is found that the plagioclase crystals in the lower and middle zones were less dense than the coexisting liquids. Other phenomena relevant to crystal transport in basaltic liquids were observed in the centrifuge experiments. These included crystal flotation by rising bubbles, plagioclase sinking because of the formation of plagioclase-magnetite composite grains, graded bedding of olivine and magnetite, and more than 60% intercumulus basaltic liquid between settled olivine crystals.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we present a new method for evaluating molecular similarity between small organic compounds. Instead of a linear representation like fingerprints, a more complex description, a feature tree, is calculated for a molecule. A feature tree represents hydrophobic fragments and functional groups of the molecule and the way these groups are linked together. Each node in the tree is labeled with a set of features representing chemical properties of the part of the molecule corresponding to the node. The comparison of feature trees is based on matching subtrees of two feature trees onto each other. Two algorithms for tackling the matching problem are described throughout this paper. On a dataset of about 1000 molecules, we demonstrate the ability of our approach to identify molecules belonging to the same class of inhibitors. With a second dataset of 58 molecules with known binding modes taken from the Brookhaven Protein Data Bank, we show that the matchings produced by our algorithms are compatible with the relative orientation of the molecules in the active site in 61% of the test cases. The average computation time for a pair comparison is about 50 ms on a current workstation.

    Notes: Summary Two computational techniques have been developed to explore the orientational and conformational space of a flexible ligand within an enzyme. Both methods use the Genetic Algorithm (GA) to generate conformationally flexible ligands in conjunction with algorithms from the DOCK suite of programs to characterize the receptor site. The methods are applied to three enzyme-ligand complexes: dihydrofolate reductase-methotrexate, thymidylate synthase-phenolpthalein and HIV protease-thioketal haloperidol. Conformations and orientations close to the crystallographically determined structures are obtained, as well as alternative structures with low energy. The potential for the GA method to screen a database of compounds is also examined. A collection of ligands is evaluated simultaneously, rather than docking the ligands individually into the enzyme.

    Notes: Summary Light and electron microscopic techniques have been used to determine the distribution, morphology and innervation of subepithelial striated muscle cells in the wall of the proximal urethra of the male guinea-pig. These cells form a continuous layer, immediately beneath the urethral epithelium extending from the bladder neck to the termination of the ejaculatory ducts into the proximal urethra. They differ from “typical” striated muscle fibres (as seen in the external urethral sphincter) by their small size, rich acetylcholinesterase content and the irregular arrangement of intracellular myofilaments and sarcoplasmic reticulum. In addition, motor end plate regions have not been observed on these striated cells when examined using a light microscopic histochemical technique. The cells are related to acetylcholinesterase positive nerves which run between them in a manner compatible with the occurrence of “en passant” synaptic interactions. Using electron microscopy, axonal varicosities containing small (50 nm diameter) agranular vesicles are encountered 50 nm from the striated cells; membrane specialisations characteristic of motor end plates have not been observed on the cells. The findings are discussed, particularly in relation to the distribution, unusual morphology and innervation of these subepithelial muscle cells.

    Notes: Summary The fine structure of the endothelium lining the femoral and mesenteric veins in the rabbit was examined following the infusion of concentrations of adrenaline varying from 0.5 to 5.0 μg/kg. Control animals were infused with saline. Vesiculation of the endothelial cells was observed following each infusion of adrenaline, the effect being most marked with the highest dose used. It is suggested that this vesiculation may be associated with the release of antihaemophilic globulin and/or plasminogen activator from the endothelial cells.

    Notes: Abstract Experiments were conducted in which sugarbeet plants (Beta vulgaris L. cv. Saxon) with 2 to 3 leaves were exposed to a simulated 2 day ozone episode (100 nl l−1, 7 h d−1). Three days later, the plants were sprayed with field rate phenmedipham (1.14 kg a.i. ha−1) and growth analysis conducted 7 days later indicated an antagonistic interaction was occurring. Physiological and biochemical studies were undertaken to determine the nature of this antagonism. Treatment with phenmedipham increased the ratio of transpiration to photosynthetic rates within 2 days of spraying, whilst exposure to ozone had no effect. When the two treatments were combined, water use efficiency was not significantly different from that when phenmedipham was applied alone. In contrast, trends in the membrane permeability after treatment, indicated that the response of plants exposed to ozone followed by treatment with the herbicide, was intermediate between that of the herbicide (high permeability) and ozone (low permeability). Furthermore, when the two treatments were combined the results of antioxidant enzyme assays indicated greater than expected activities of enzymes which are mainly cytosolic, eg. guaiacol peroxidase, as well as a similar increase in the activity of the mainly chloroplastic superoxide dismutase. Treatment with ozone alone and phenmedipham alone only slightly increased superoxide dismutase. Ozone may therefore induce the activities of these protective enzymes. Thus, when another oxidative stress, such as the photosystem II inhibitor phenmedipham, was applied the plants could then respond more quickly and showed less herbicide visible damage.
