Notes: Summary The concentration of various foreign atoms in the compositional semiconductor Hg1−xCdxTe (x=0.2) has been determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and SIMS. The first problem of interest included the control of In doping of the (Hg,Cd)Te-melt solution and the epitaxial layers grown by step-cooling method. On the basis of analytical results it was possible to estimate the distribution coefficient k for the incorporation of indium into Hg1−xCdxTe. A value of k=3.2 has been found. This distribution coefficient did not change in the concentration range of In from 1×1016 atoms to 1×1018 atoms cm−3 in the melt solution. A distribution coefficient of about 3.0 was also determined by PIXE investigations. The second investigation concerned the level of background impurities in the bulk of HgCdTe crystals. The concentrations of some fast acceptors like Cu and Ag were determined. In the case of Ag it was confirmed, that the p-carrier concentration is influenced by the impurity level of Ag.

Notes: Abstract A study of the environmental contamination of amorphous YBa2Cu3O7-δ fibers has been undertaken in order to determine the best method to handle these materials during the fabrication of superconducting wire. The fibers often need to be handled in organic solvents as part of the cleaning and manipulating process. In organics that are free of water, the fibers retain their mechanical strength with little carbon contamination or other ill effects. Water, however, causes premature crystallization and destroys the mechanical strength of the fibers.

Notes: Abstract A three-port approximation of the quantum mixer theory is employed to perform mixer gain calculations at 230 GHz for SIS junctions with integrated tuning structures. In addition, the embedding impedance range of a waveguide mixer mount has been obtained from model measurements and has been included in the gain calculations. The results show that even moderately small junctions can perform well in a waveguide environment when an integrated tuning structure is used. A three-element tuning circuit is presented that would allow broad band operation with a fixed embedding impedance which is important for applications using a planar antenna structure.

Notes: Abstract Odontometric data are reported for Oleneostrovskii mogilnik, a Mesolithic cemetery in the Karelian USSR. Containing the skeletal remains of 148 individuals and dated to 7500b.p., it is the largest and oldest of the known peri-Baltic Mesolithic cemeteries. The dental data from this site are compared to those from Skateholm, where dental dimensions closely approximate the mean tooth sizes for all late Mesolithic European material. Olenii ostrov possesses a significantly smaller dentition, despite antedating the Skateholm sample by 1500 years. Geographic, archaeological, linguistic and ancillary dental data are discussed which argue strongly for the presence in Mesolithic northern Europe of at least two quasi-isolated human mating networks. One of these, documented by Olenii ostrov, may also represent the earliest evidence for the establishment in the taiga zone of populations whose descendants are the modern Saami (=”Lapps”).

Notes: Abstract The present status of surface, interface andthin film studies with perturbed γγ-angular correlation (PAC) spectroscopy is reviewed. Applications include adsorbate diffusion andstructural phase transitions on stepped metal surfaces, surface andinterface magnetism as well as compound formation at reactive metal/metal interfaces. First applications to semiconductor surfaces andmetal/semiconductor interfaces are discussed.

Notes: Abstract PAC spectroscopy has been used to study the compound formation at the Pd(100)/In interface. Indium films of various thicknesses have been deposited onto Pd(100) single crystals. The111In PAC probes are either deposited on the Pd(100) surface before covering it with In or introduced into the In metal before producing the interface. Pd/In compounds with polycrystalline structure of various stoichiometry are identified from the detection of significant electric field gradient tensors after isochronal as well as isothemal annealing. In particular we find an ordered structure at the interface directly after In deposition.

Notes: Summary Systematic SFC experiments on five homologous 4-n-alkoxy-4′-cyanobiphenyls (with alkoxy = pentyloxy to nonyloxy) were performed to determine their capacity factors k'i in supercritical carbon dioxide on Perisorb A and RP-8; the temperature and pressure ranges were 305 to 335 K and 80 to 170 bar, respectively, corresponding to mobile phase densities of 0.35 to 0.85 g · cm−3. Analytical separations of six homologues (pentyloxy to decyloxy) on Spherisorb ODS-2 are also presented. For the measurements an SFC chromatograph with UV detection was used.

Description: The taxonomy of Talaromyces rugulosus, T. wortmannii and closely related species, classified in Talaromyces sect. Islandici, is reviewed in this paper. The species of Talaromyces sect. Islandici have restricted growth on MEA and CYA, generally have yellow mycelia and produce rugulosin and/or skyrin. They are important in biotechnology (e.g. T. rugulosus, T. wortmannii) and in medicine (e.g. T. piceus, T. radicus). The taxonomy of sect. Islandici was resolved using a combination of morphological, extrolite and phylogenetic data, using the Genealogical Concordance Phylogenetic Species Recognition (GCPSR) concept, with special focus on the T. rugulosus and T. wortmannii species complexes. In this paper, we synonymise T. variabilis, Penicillium concavorugulosum and T. sublevisporus with T. wortmannii, and introduce four new species as T. acaricola, T. crassus, T. infraolivaceus and T. subaurantiacus. Finally, we provide a synoptic table for the identification of the 19 species classified in the section.

Description: The genus Torulomyces was characterised by species that typically have conidiophores consisting of solitary phialides that produce long chains of conidia connected by disjunctors. Based on the phylogenetic position of P. lagena (generic ex-neotype), the genus and its seven species were transferred to Penicillium and classified in sect. Torulomyces along with P. cryptum and P. lassenii. The aim of this study was to review the species currently classified in sect. Torulomyces using morphology and phylogenies of the ITS, BenA, CaM and RPB2 regions. Based on our results, we accept 16 species in sect. Torulomyces, including 12 new species described as P. aeris, P. austricola, P. cantabricum, P. catalonicum, P. oregonense, P. marthae-christenseniae, P. riverlandense, P. tubakianum, P. variratense, P. williamettense, P. wisconsinense and P. wollemiicola. In addition, we reclassify P. laeve and P. ovatum in sect. Exilicaulis and correct the typification of P. lagena. We provide descriptions and notes on the identification of the species.
