    Magnetic domain confinement using nonplanar substrates (2000)

    Notes: Studies have been performed of ferromagnetic films deposited on nonplanar substrates. It is shown that the step edges act as efficient localization sites for domain boundaries. This process enables the fabrication of continuous magnetic films whose domain boundaries can be accurately positioned by prepatterning of the substrate. Magnetoresistance data confirm the formation of separate magnetic regions and the ability to switch the magnetization of these independently. This simple method has many applications for designing magnetic structures with controlled domain walls. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract. Vertebrate epithelial appendages are elaborate topological transformations of flat epithelia into complex organs that either protrude out of external (integument) and internal (oral cavity, gut) epithelia, or invaginate into the surrounding mesenchyme. Although they have specific structures and diverse functions, most epithelial appendages share similar developmental stages, including induction, morphogenesis, differentiation and cycling. The roles of the SHH pathway are analyzed in exemplary organs including feather, hair, tooth, tongue papilla, lung and foregut. SHH is not essential for induction and differentiation, but is involved heavily in morphogenetic processes including cell proliferation (size regulation), branching morphogenesis, mesenchymal condensation, fate determination (segmentation), polarizing activities and so on. Through differential activation of these processes by SHH in a spatiotemporal-specific fashion, organs of different shape and size are laid down. During evolution, new links of developmental pathways may occur and novel forms of epithelial appendages may emerge,upon which evolutionary selections can act. Sites of major variations have progressed from the body plan to the limb plan to the epithelial appendage plan. With its powerful morphogenetic activities, the SHH pathway would likely continue to play a major role in the evolution of novel epithelial appendages.

    Notes: Abstract: Many organisations undertake business process re-engineering (BPR) projects in order to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Although this approach can result in significant improvements and benefits, there are high risks associated with radical changes of business processes and the failure rate of BPR projects is reported to be as high as 70%. The Centre for Re-engineering Business Processes (REBUS) was established at Brunel University to provide a multidisciplinary environment for research into BPR and its success factors. This paper describes the REBUS approach to research concerning the success of BPR projects and presents examples of some of the projects carried out.

    Notes: Abstract: In today’s competitive business environment, the majority of companies are expected to be represented on the Internet in the form of an electronic commerce site. In an effort to keep up with current business trends, certain aspects of interface design such as those related to navigation and perception may be overlooked. For instance, the manner in which a visitor to the site might perceive the information displayed or the ease with which they navigate through the site may not be taken into consideration. This paper reports on the evaluation of the electronic commerce sites of three different companies, focusing specifically on the human factors issues such as perception and navigation. Heuristic evaluation, the most popular method for investigating user interface design, is the technique employed to assess each of these sites. In light of the results from the analysis of the evaluation data, virtual environments are suggested as a way of improving the navigation and perception display constraints.

    Notes: Abstract The measurements of viscosity η are reported for seven binary mixtures of acrylonitrile (AN) with ethanenitrile (EN), methyl acetate (MA), ethyl acetate (EA), n-butyl acetate (BA), dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylacetamide (DMA), and dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) at 303.15 K temperature. The viscosity data have been correlated with the equations of Grunberg and Nissan; Hind, McLaughlin, and Ubbelohde; Tamura and Kurata; Katti and Chaudhri; McAllister; Heric and Brewer; and of Auslaender. The relations between the viscosity deviations Δη, excess Gibbs energy of activation ΔG*E of viscous flow, and the intermolecular interaction in these mixtures are discussed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Amine als Korrosionsinhibitoren für KupferDie Untersuchung der inhibierenden Wirkung einiger Pyridin- und Anilinderivate auf die Korrosion von Kupfer in Persulfatlösungen ermöglicht die Aufstellung der folgenden Reihenfolge abnehmender Inhibitorwirkung: 2,6-Lutidin - 2-Picolin - Pyridin - m-Anisidin - p-Phenetidin - Anilin.Die Inhibierung kann im allgemeinen auf die Adsorption organischer Moleküle zurückgeführt werden, wobei der Stickstoff als Elektronendonator an der Metalloberfläche fixiert wird. Symmetrische Substitution durch Methylgruppen in Pyridin erhöht die Hemmwirkung. Im Falle der Anilinderivate ist die Wirkung des m-Anisidins am höchsten. Aufgrund von elektrochemischen Versuchen ist die Reaktion kathodisch kontrolliert, wobei die Kathode bei hohen Stromdichten sehr stark polarisiert ist.
    Notes: The study of the inhibiting effect of certain pyridine and aniline derivatives on the corrosion of copper in persulphate solutions enables the compounds to be arranged in the following series of decreasing inhibiting power; 2,6-lutidine - 2-picoline - pyridine - m-anisidine - p-phenetidine - aniline.Inhibition may generally be attributed to the adsorption of organic molecules, nitrogen being an electron donor and becoming attached to the metal surface. Symmetric substitution by methyl groups in the pyridine molecule increases the inhibiting effect. In the case of aniline derivatives m-anisidine is superior to the other compounds studied. On the base of electrochemical experiments it may be concluded that the reaction is under cathodic control, the cathode being extremely polarized at high current densities.

    Description / Table of Contents: Einfluß der Derivate von Toluidin und Acridin auf die Korrosion von Messing 63/37 in SalpetersäurelösungenUnter den untersuchten Inhibitoren - o-, m- und p-Toluidin, Acridin, Phenazin und Xanthin - haben sich o-Toluidin und Acridin als ausgezeichnete Inhibitoren der Korrosion von Messing in Salpetersäure erwiesen. In der Toluidinreihe ist die Wirkung der Ortho-Verbindung größer als die der Para-Verbindung. Aufgrund der Ergebnisse erhält man die folgende Reihe der Inhibitorwirksamkeit: o-Toluidin - p-Toluidin - m-Toluidin - Acridin - Xanthin - Phenazin.Die Wirkung beruht wahrscheinlich auf der Beseitigung der Salpetrigen Säure (durch Diazotierung) und auf der Adsorption von Oniumionen an der Metalloberfläche, NH2-Gruppen bewirken eine Aktivierung aller Positionen in ringförmigem Molekül.
    Notes: Among the inhibitor studied - o-, m-and p-toluidines, acridine, phenazine and xanthine - o-toluidine and acridine have turned out to be excellent inhibitors of the corrosion of brass in nitric acid. As to the toluidine series the inhibiting power of the ortho isomer is superior to that of the para isomer. On the base of the results obtained the following order of efficiency may be established - o-toluidine - p-toluidine - m-toluidine - acridine - xanthine - phenazine.The efficiency is probably due to the elimination of nitrous acid (by diazotization) and to adsorption of onium type ions at a metal surface. NH2 groups give rise to an activation of all the positions in the cyclic molecule.
