SYNOPSIS. Cell-free extracts of Tetrahymena contain adenase, guanase, xanthine oxidase, uricase, and adenosine deaminase. The levels of activity of the latter three are of the same order of magnitude as in mammalian tissues. 5′-Adenylic acid deaminase is also present in ciliate extracts. Spectrophotometric assays of this enzyme indicate formation of two intermediates which, although not as yet identified, are not precursors of uric acid, the expected product of deamination of the nucleotide.
