Summary Two versions of the exponential method for the calculation of the temperature of a wellmixed river are compared with each other: version I using theequilibrium temperature as reference temperature, and version II using theundisturbed river temperature as reference temperature. It is verified that excess temperatures in a river decay approximately exponentially; this fact provides a possibility for calculating the exchange coefficients for version II. The neglection of longitudinal dispersion is discussed. The exchange coefficients of version II are about 40% greater than those of version I. It is shown that the decay of excess temperatures may be described by a self-similar relation. This implies that (after suitable data reduction) large and small rivers are comparable with respect to their thermal behavior.
Notes:
