Abstract An instrument is described which allows measurement of oxygen consumption of newborn animals at rates to 10 mm3/min (10 μl/min). The principle of operation is to maintain equal pressure between two identical chambers. The animal is placed in one chamber and carbon dioxide is removed by soda-lime filters. Oxygen is introduced into the chamber at the rate equal to the consumption of the animal. A microprocessor controller regulates the flow rate and computes average consumption.
