Abstract Study of clay sedimentation in the Tyrrhenian area during late Miocene time allows to distinguish continental, synsedimentary, and diagenetic influences on the composition of sedimentary rocks, according to the geographic location. In south Sicily smectite-rich assemblages were mainly eroded from soils developed under subarid conditions. On the eastern margin of Sardinia abundant micaillite was supplied from exposed areas tectonically rejuvenated during the opening of the Tyrrhenian Sea. In the westernmost part of the Tyrrhenian Basin evaporative environments combined to strong geothermal gradient allowed the formation of sediments rich in euhedral chlorite.
