Notes: Summary White (W), red (R), or combined (WR) tissue pieces from the myotomal musculature of the carp were incubated and some parameters of the carbohydrate metabolism followed, in basal conditions, and under the action of phloridzin, of insulin, or of adrenaline. 1. In WR pieces incubated in basal conditions, in glucose-free medium, the glycogen content dropped more in W than in R, free glucose content decreased only in W, lactate increased only in R (Fig. 1). In glucose containing medium, glycogen decreased only in W when incubated alone, but in both tissues of WR pieces. 2. Phloridzin elicited, in WR pieces, a supplementary drop of W glycogen, but reduced its decrease in R. Insulin moderated the glycogen loss of W (WR pieces); in glucose containing medium, it increased the glycogen and lactate content of R incubated alone, and diminished its content of reducing sugars. Adrenaline enhanced the glycogen loss of R, and increased its lactate concentration. 3. The results show a higher sensitivity of R than of W to insulin and adrenaline actions. 4. The results can be interpreted in terms of the hypothesis of a direct transfer of glucose from R to W, and of lactate from W to R.
