Notes:
Abstract This paper deals in the first part with the optimisation of IR-ATR-spectrometry (crystal material, sample size, sample location on the reflection element, applied pressure) in order to carry out relative-quantitative analyses of the main components in polyurethane-silicone-copolymers. After that a characteristic relative standard deviation of v=0.64% has been achieved by investigating the composition of a standard intraaortic balloon pump. In a second part analyses of implanted and non-implanted membranes, synthetised after different methods, are described. Significant changes of the surface-composition have been found. A “relative blood compatability-index” has been formed, which is an indicator of the polyurethane-silicone-content relative to a standard intraaortic balloon pump (information depth = 3 Μm). By correlation of these index-values with in vivo-investigations and literature values it was found that blood-compatible surfaces have indices ≧80% and that samples with indices of ≦ 65% are thrombogenic. In that way membrane samples not usable for implantation could be identified and new ways for producing membranes in actificial hearts could be checked.
