Notes:
Summary A new method is described for the isolation of fat-soluble dyestuffs from fats and mineral oils. Synthetic dyestuffs are separated by adsorption on activated iron hydroxide. For liberation of the dyestuffs the adsorbent is dissolved in hydrochloric acid and by extraction with ether they can be isolated free from fats. Carotenoids, which are not adsorbed on iron hydroxide, are subsequently isolated by shaking with fuller's earth and elution with acetone. The identification of the dyestuffs is performed by thin-layer chromatography.
