Abstract The concept of the cold crucible is critically re-examined. In order to overcome some of the more serious limitations of the Hukin design, consideration is given to a return to the synthetic crucible; that is one put together from (identical) individual parts. The important features of such a crucible are compared and contrasted with those of one carved from the solid.
