Conclusions 1. On the basis of a study of the mass spectra of the methyl esters of benzyl- and phenoxymethylpenillonic acids and their trideuteriomethyl analogs, it has been established that the main directions of fragmentation of these compounds are connected with three types of cleavages of the bonds of the thiazolidine ring. 2. The difference in the spectra of the methyl esters of benzyl- and phenoxymethylpenillonic acids are due to the nature of the radicals R and consist in the elimination of various fragments of the side chain attached to the imidazolidine ring.
