    Description / Table of Contents: Formaldehyde- and acetaldehyde-O-vinylacetals were synthesized by dehydrohalogenation of the analogous β-hydroxyethyl-compounds. If initiated radically the monomers do not homopolymerize well but they form regular alternating copolymers with maleic anhydride. In case of the kationic polymerization the O—CH2—O-groups act as chain transfer agents. On heating the poly-O-vinyl-acetals especially with LEWIS acids a hydride shift takes place, and polymers with ester-side-chains are formed.
    Notes: Formaldehyd- und Acetaldehyd-O-vinylacetale wurden durch Dehydrohalogenierung aus den entsprechenden β-Chloräthylverbindungen dargestellt. Die Monomeren homopolymerisieren radikalisch nur shehr schlecht, bilden jedoch mit Maleinsäreanhydrid regelmäßig alternierende Copolymere. Bei der kationisch initiierten Polymerisation wirken die—O—CH2—O-Gruppen als Kettenüberträger. Beim erhitzen der Poly-O-vinylacetale, besonders mit LEWIS-ären, treten durch Hydridwanderung estergruppenhaltige Polymere auf.
