The preparation of a finely divided form of α-boron, which is suitable for catalytic reactions, is described. This form is investigated with regard to the surface by physical and chemical methods.Formic acid and alcohols are dehydrated by this catalyst. The rate of these reactions was determined as a function of temperature and transport rate. The catalytic efficiency of α-boron is surprisingly high. This fact may accounted to an increased activation of adsorbed molecules at neighboured BOH groups on the surface of the catalyst. Especially the CH bonds of methyl groups are activated by the catalyst as was shown by dehydration of partially deuterated 2-propanol and H - D exchange between propene and D2O.

Es wird die Darstellung von feinverteiltem α-Bor in einer fär katalytische Umsetzungen geeigneten Form beschrieben. Dieses Produkt wird durch einige physikalische und chemische Untersuchungen zur Partikeloberfläche näher charakterisiert. Der katalytische Ameisensäure- und Alkoholzerfall verläuft an ihm nahezu aussehließlich als Dehydratisierung. Die Geschwindigkeit dieser Umsetzungen wurde in Abhängigkeit von Temperatur und Überfährungsgeschwindigkeit gemessen. Die äberraschend große Wirksamkeit des α-Bors kann als eine starke Aktivierung der adsorbierten Molekeln an benachbarten Gruppen in der Katalysatorgrenzfläche gedeutet werden, die durch Wechselbeziehungen zwischen den ikosaedrisch angeordneten Boratomen begänstigt wird. - Die Dehydratisierung von partiell deuteriertem Isopropanol und der H/D-Austausch zwischen Propen und D2O zeigen die Aktivierung der CH-Bindungen vor allem in den CH3-Gruppen bei der Katalyse an α-Bor an.
