The acid decomposition of blue and green ultramarine in presence of CHCl3 gives polysulfenes, with averaged chain lengths of 4.16 for the blue and 2.90 sulfur for the green ultramarine. In both forms a small amount of sulfur is bound in compounds containing oxygen. During the acid decomposition of blue ultramarine some SO2 is found besides H2S. The ratio of H2S evolved to sulfur not combined with oxygen supports that, in blue ultramarine, there are sulfur molecules of a few atoms only besides sulfide and polysulfide ions. The former may be responsible for the blue colour. So far nothing can be said about the cause of the green colour.

Bei der Säurezersetzung von blauem und grünem Ultramarin in Gegenwart von Chloroform konnten Polysulfane nachgewiesen werden. Die mittlere Kettenlänge betrug für blauen Ultramarin 4,16, für grünen Ultramarin 2,90 Schwefelatome. Im blauen und im grünen Ultramarin ist ein kleiner Teil des Schwefels in Sauerstoff enthaltenden Schwefelverbindungen gebunden. Bei der Säurezersetzung des blauen Ultramarins wird neben H2S auch etwas SO2 in Freiheit gesetzt. Das Mengenverhältnis des freigesetzten H2S zu dem nicht an Sauerstoff gebundenen Schwefel spricht dafür, daß der blaue Ultramarin neben Sulfid bzw. Polysulfidionen auch Schwefelmolekülen mit niederer Atomzahl enthält. Diese könnten die Träger der blauen Farbe sein. über den Farbträger des grünen Ultramarins läßt sich noch nichts aussagen.
