Description / Table of Contents: Reactions of the polynuclear carbonyl-m̈-ol-tungstates with an equivalent amount of mineral acid lead to tungsten carbonyl hydrides, of which W3(CO)9(OH)2(H2O)H4 was carefully investigated. According to potentiometric titrations this compound is a typical acid comparably to phosphorous acid (Ks1 ∼ 10-2). By reaction with cations tertiary salts of this acid are preferred, however primary and secondary salts have also been prepared. The aqueous solution of W3(CO)9(OH)2(H2O)H4 is decomposed on heating, yielding W(CO)3(H2O)3 and [W(CO)3(H2O)H]4: The infrared spectra of the diamagnetic tungsten carbonyl hydrides are discussed.
