Corrosion of metals caused by intermediate compoundsThe author reports cases of heavy corrosion of tantalum and noble metals caused by mixes of methane and halogens. Series of tests suggest that this kind of corrosion is caused by the influence of intermedialely generated chloro-formic acid. Mixes of halogens with higher alcohols such as ethanol, propanol, etc. have no corrosive effect on tantalum.

Es wird über starke Korrosion von Tantal und Edelmetallen durch Mischungen aus Methanol und Halogenen berichtet. Durch Versuchsreihen wird nahegelegt, daß dieser Angriff auf der Einwirkung intermediär entstehender Chlorameisensäure beruht. Gemische von Halogenen mit höheren Alkoholen wie Äthanol, Propanol usw. greifen Tantal nicht an.
