Notes:
By means of a conventional Raman spectrometer that had been carefully designed for near-infrared Raman excitation, it was possible to record highly resolved Raman spectra of solid polycrystalline potassium and barium permanganate. The spectra of these deeply coloured materials are of high quality and comparable to those reported hitherto, obtained using Fourier transform Raman techniques and near-infrared excitation. Full site symmetry splitting and partial factor group splitting of the bands of the permanganate ion could be observed.
