This survey of th e literature has been compiled b searching secondary sources, such as Sports Fishery Abstracts and the Zoologicat Record, as well as books on salmon or marine fishes, and the literature cited in the papers or books consulted. It is confined to English language texts, mainly from the United King dom and Ireland, with some references to North America. It is certainly incomplete but it is felt that within these limitations it represents a fair summary of tlic existing literature.
