Abstract With the aid of Hα and Ca ii K filtergrams and magnetograms of region McMath 12417 on 3, 4 and 5 July 1973, we have followed the evolution of a moving rim of positive magnetic flux 50″ long in an area dominated by negative flux. Chromospheric activity in the form of brightenings and small surges was associated with this moving flux; a concentration of activity is observed at the locations where magnetic fields of opposite sign meet together. The weakening of the Ca ii K emission along the edges of colliding opposite fields supports evidence from magnetograms that the photospheric magnetic field at that location has decreased strikingly over a period of six hours.
