Abstract The gears of driveline systems in diesel engines must be designed with large backlashes within the gear meshes due to the large temperature operating range of such systems. This leads to hammering processes with extremely high overloads where hammering is an impulsive separation process of the tooth flanks caused by the large torques as generated by the injection pumps. This paper presents a theoretical model for such processes and gives a comparison with measurements.
