Discuss., https//doi.org/10.5194/acp-2017-481,2017 Manuscript under review for ACP (discussion: open, 0 comments) Naturally charged highly oxidised molecules (HOMs) were characterized using advanced mass spectrometers. Two different classes of compounds, clustered with the most abundant inorganic acids, were identified: HOMs containing only carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen-containing HOMs or organonitrates (ONs). They exhibit strong diurnal variations where HOMs peak during night and ONs during day. Finally, large clusters containing up to 40 carbon atoms (4 oxidized α-pinene units) were observed.
