Regardless of size and landscape context of surface water in frozen peatland region on NE Europe, the bio- and photo-degradability of dissolved organic matter (DOM) over a month of incubation across a range of temperatures was below 10 %. We challenged the paradigm of dominance of photolysis and biodegradation in DOM processing in surface waters from frozen peatlands and we hypothesize the peat porewater DOM degradation and respiration of sediments as main drivers of CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 emission in this region.
