Description:
Results from IRAS and the technical details of the IRAS satellite are reviewed. The IRAS telescope operation is briefly described. The observation of the Vega phenomenon, or the orbiting clouds of dust which encircle main sequence stars, is discussed. Also, the discovery that a large number of solar-type stars have excess IR radiation due to orbiting shells or disks of solid material is examined. In addition, the prospects for future telescopes are considered.
