Description: Recent detailed evaluation of the use of an optical cross-beam system to measure convective wind velocities are reported. Low level measurements, where the optical system is looking at either the earth surface or cloud banks, are demonstrated. Further information on the nature and scale of the light fluctuations is reviewed.
