Notes:
A development corporation presents unique mapping requirements to a commercial survey organisation. The background to the specialist problems encountered relates to the history of the growth of development corporations in the UK, commencing with the establishment of Letchworth Garden City. The New Towns Development Corporations were responsible for relocating city centre businesses to obtain better amenities for the workforce; many substantial mapping contracts for these new towns were completed by rival survey companies. The next generation is represented by the inception of the Urban Development Corporations, with the aim of promoting urban renewal. The London Docklands initiative is an example of recent development where the most modern surveying techniques need to be employed. The expanding market of spatial data management offers a major opportunity for survey organisations if financial rewards can be safeguarded.
