SYNOPSIS. Four strains of ciliates regarded as strains of Tetrahymena vorax were studied nutritionally and serologically. All grew on a chemically defined medium and phospholipid was generally stimulatory. It is concluded from the results of the present study, together with information available in the literature, that two of the strains (V1 and PP) are actually strains of T. pyriformis. This leaves T. vorax represented by two extant strains, V2 and Tur, both of which are polymorphic.Evidence is presented for “stable transformations” in two of the strains included in the study, i.e., stocks have spontaneously developed phenotypic differences which are uniparentally inherited. The potential importance of studies of uniparental inheritance for physiological and developmental genetics is discussed.
