Experimental studies of density, temperature, or potential fluctuations in high-temperature plasmas have been limited by the inability of the available diagnostics to determine radial and poloidal wave numbers at the same plasma location. A technique is under investigation that can permit the heavy ion-beam probe to determine the wave number in two dimensions by adding a rapid, small-amplitude, square-wave voltage modulation to both the sweep plates and the accelerator that moves the measurement points along and perpendicular to the beam. k can then be determined for fluctuation frequencies limited only by the beam modulation and detector electronics.
