The confinement of ions and electrons by linear and nonlinear fields is studied. It is assumed that both species are perturbed by collisions with a neutral background gas with the resulting energy and momentum transfer between the interacting species. Asymptotic expansions, based on a singular perturbation approach in terms of the momentum exchange during collisions, are used to determine the distribution function of the confined species.
