Molecular dynamics simulations of Mach cones in a two-dimensional, hexagonal dusty plasma crystal are presented. The initial conditions and physical parameters (such as the dust charge, interparticle spacing, the Debye length, and externally imposed laser force) are chosen to correspond to typical laboratory experimental conditions. The interparticle potential is assumed to be Yukawa. Conditions under which compressional and shear wave Mach cones are excited in laboratory experiments are discussed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
