Magnetization measurements have been made on (Y1−xSmx)2 Fe14B compounds with x≤0.1 over the temperature range from 1.5 K to room temperature. The c axis is the easy magnetization direction for pure Y2Fe14B at all temperatures, reflecting the anisotropy of the Fe sublattice. X-ray diffraction analyses on aligned powders indicate that all samples studied have easy magnetization direction parallel to the c axis at room temperature. The addition of Sm results in a decrease of anisotropy at room temperature. At low temperatures it induces a spin reorientation in all systems studied. A transition to planar anisotropy is observed for x=0.08 and 0.1.
