The soliton return effect in an annular Josephson junction is analyzed in detail by using an analytical treatment. Some results are compared with that of direct numerically simulation. The conditions for a resonant soliton motion that corresponds to a current step in the I-V characteristic are discussed. It is shown that the minimum current and voltage of the current step is not equal to zero because of the soliton return effect, and relates to the geometric and dissipative parameters of the junction. It is found that a kind of critical situation exists in an annular junction on the lower end of a current step that separates the zero voltage states and finite voltage states. A discussion of the difference between an in-line and annular junction is also made.
