We report on laboratory and field measurements of electrical effects caused by dislocation of different geomaterials at a shear plane. The onset of the electrical signals precedes the macroscopic dislocation. From the results, we propose a phenomenological model in four steps: mechanical loading, charge generation in the creep phase, charge separation during dislocation, and mechanical relaxation and electrical discharge. This technique is aimed to be used in landslide surveillance operation. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
