Abstract Mixed monolayers at the water/air interphase of a non-ionizable polymer, polymethylmethacrylate, and two low molecular weight compounds containing ionizable groups, stearylamine and stearic acid, were examined on substrates with different pHs. The spreading isotherms and the measurements of the surface potential showed that the macromolecular component was compatible with the low molecular weight component only if the monolayer of this second component was on a substrate with a pH which permitted a relatively high degree of ionization. In this case, the miscibility could be attributed to attractive interactions between the ionized groups of the low molecular weight substance and the polar groups of the macromolecular substance.
