Abstract We studied the salt concentration dependence of the diffusion constant of the highly charged and monodispersed polystyrene latex sphere using the techniques of dynamic light scattering. At extremely low ionic strength, the diffusion constant is smaller than that at the higher ionic strength by 10 % of the latter value. The addition of smal amount of N(CH3) 4 + to the latex solution increases the diffusion constant. These experimental results are explained by the change of the hydrodynamic radius which depends on sizes of the polystyrene core and the structural water surrounding it.
