Abstract The solution of the diffusion equation in the gas phase of the human lung is very difficult because of the structure of the bronchial tree. It is shown by means of physical arguments, how one can reduce the diffusion equation to a simple one-dimensional form. The solution is then obtained by a stochastic simulation, which is easily realized on a digital computer.
