Abstract The condition which allows the existence of induced replication maps in (M,R)-systems is shown to place strong restrictions on the “richness” of the category from which these systems can be constructed. This condition also admits of a simple biological interpretation, which can be checked empirically, and which may offer insight into the physical and biological realizations of these abstract systems.
