9. BeiEuglena gracilis kommt zeitweise Encystierung ohne Vermehrung vor.
Notes:
Summary 1. There are three distinct methods of nutrition ineuglena: a) Holozic, the ingestion of solid particles of food. b) Saprophytic, the absorption of organic foods in solution through the body wall. c) Holophytic, the utilization of simple chemical elements like water and carbon dioxide in the formation of foods for metabolism. 2. Cultures develop most rapidly at room temperature, if sufficient food is present. 3. Acidity and alkalinity are controlling factors in reproduction, nutrition and life of cultures. 4. Lack of food and presence of chlorophyll are conducive to encystment, while the lack of both food and chlorophyll occasions death. 5. In the free active phase the saprophytic method of nutrition plays the most important role, while the holozoic method contributes but little. 6. The holophytic method predominates in the encysted forms. 7. Lack of food or slight acidity causes theeuglena to migrate downward to the interior or bottom of the culture. 8. Transverse division occurs in the active and encysted forms. Reproduction by longitudinal division plays the greatest role in the free swimming and encysted forms. 9. Temporary encystment without reproduction occurs inE. gracilis.
